Climb365 winter ice Climbing conditions report.

Winter 2008 Stuart & Anna have been busy with a new Baby and have not been able to provide a daily conditions report. We hope to be able to offer this again next year 2009. See you then!!
Friday 2nd March
Simply the conditions are perfect. Fresh snow, perfect snow ice and sun.
Tomorrow 0c at 900m then colder on Sunday. The conditions will only get
better.

Sneachda in perfect winter condition.
Thursday 1st March
Another snowy day with NW winds. Snow down to about 400m. Cold -4c and less
winds for tomorrow. Ice building with the freezing level going up and down
soo quickly. Saturday is forecast to be 0c at 900m so more good conditions
building in the Northern Corries where the cliffs start at about 1000m.
Worth the drive.

The Monadhliath, great for winter hill walking.
Wednesday 28th Feb
A windy day with drizzle followed by snow down to about 850m. We climbed
The Haston Line III4 and Hidden Chimney II/III. Both in reasonable condition.
The snow is wet and heavy and with the temp dropping this afternoon things
are looking good for the w/e. The crags are getting white again and there
is good frozen turf on the routes. Tomorrow looks less windy with cold temps!!!

Cornices at the top of Jacobs Ladder. Wet and heavy! NOT such a good idea.
Why don't people read the avalanche report?
Tuesday 27th Feb
A wild day with category 5 avalanche warning. Lots of snow early then a
sudden rise in temp and rain to follow. Cold temps for the next few days
will build great ice and a return to winter. Things should be building quickly.

Snow hole Creag Meagaidh
Monday 26th Feb
A very cold day with northerly winds. Snow pack frozen with fresh slab on easterly aspects. Coire an Lochain in great condition with Astroturfer and Ewan Buttress climbed amoungst others. Fantastic views and great sunshine on the top.
Saturday 24th Feb
A warm day with some brief periods of rain. Snow ice in the gullies is hanging
on. Today reports of cornice collapse in Lochan and some of the routes climbed
were Fiacaill Couloir, Fingers Ridge and much more with the international
meet on at the moment. Cold weather forcast for Monday. Sorry no pic forgot
the camera.
Friday 23rd Feb
Warm conditions yesterday afternoon led to some reported cornice collapse.
Warm weather forecast for tomorrow will continue to weaken cornices and
thaw the snow pack. Sunday may bring colder temps and slow the thaw. Snow
is forecast for 1000m and above so higher crags better. There are good conditions
on the crags but exit gullies and cornices are loaded and weak.
Thursday 22nd Feb
A windy and snowy morning turned to rain at all levels in the afternoon.
Lots of wet wind slab with the top of gullies remaining very corniced. The
snow will be amazing if it goes cold. Despite the thaw, there is still a
lot of snow on the crags.
Wednesday 21st Feb
Snowing today at coire level. Then a rise in temp during the afternoon.
Good conditions in Coire an Lochan. The temp being about 0 at 900m is making
for good freeze thaw. More snow and some strong South East winds due tomorrow.
Winter is getting even better.

Anna guiding Andromeda IV/4 coire an Lochan
Tuesday 20th Feb
Climbing is good. Conditions are very settled and the snow is catagory 1.
Lots of snow well consildated but crags looking a little black for the harder
mixed routes. Routes like Astroturfer in Lochan are in near perfect condition.
Hell's lum is pretty thin although we could not see into the actual route
of that name. Beautiful views into the Loch Avon valley today.

20th Feb fiacall buttress.

20th Feb Loch Avon valley, less snow but beautiful.
Wednesday 14th Feb
Thankfully we had a day off as it has been blowing like a blowy thing. The
winds reached 114mph on Cairngorm today. Sleet over night will bring more
consolidation with the freeze thaw doing well.
Tuesday 13th Feb
Slighlty colder today which has settled the snow. We headed into Coire an
Lochan and climbed oesophagus III.

Looking towards the Fiacall Coire Sneachda
Monday 12th Feb
The northern corries had no wind and great conditions. The storm has left
big cornices at the top of the big gullies. Red gully avalanched. We climbind
Invernookie in great condition.

Fiacall Buttress "Invernookie III4"
Sunday 11th Feb
Yesterday (saturday) our teams did some great ice climbing near Creag Meagaidh.
Cairngorm conditions continuing to build in these storms. Tomorrow looks
good with less wind a slight thaw and then re-freeze. Will be brilliant
by next w/e.

7 pitches of grade III ice near Creag Meagaidh
Saturday 10th Feb
Cairngorms storm bound. Strong South Easterly winds causing high avalanche
risk in the cories Good for building climbing conditions. An old base of
snow exists under new wind slab. Things will be good if it goes a little
warm and then cold through early this week.
Wednesday 7th Feb on the Fiacaill a coire an Sneachda.
