Orienteering is a fantasic activity that is both fun and challenging.
It involves using a map to find hidden markers in the woods. We run two different sessions.
Firstly as an orienteering competition where different markers have a different point value depending on difficulty of the location and over a fixed time you try to get as many points as possible.
Secondly as a more structured teaching session where we spend more time looking at the detail of the map and developing fast effiecient map reading skills.
Which ever session you choose, this is an excellent way to get out and have some fun while learning about map work.
In the past we have catered for all kinds of groups; school groups, stag do's, hen do's, scout packs, 40th birthdays, summer camps, friends day out... The list go's on.
Your half day sessions would involve an introduction showing you how to: orientate the map, recognise symbols, interpret contours and other land forms, relocate when you are lost and the best stratergies for finding the hidden markers.
From here the session can take one of two forms.
Firstly, a competition where, singularly or in pairs, you race against the clock to get as many points as possible. Each marker has its own point system depending on the difficulty of the location. Nearer markers are worth less points but are also easier and quicker to find.
Secondly, a more indepth look at the contours and stratergies for fast efficient navigation. The hidden markers are used as a tool to confirm and relocate and our aim is to develop map work skills.
Which ever session you choose, this is an excellent way to get out and have some fun while learning about map work.
