The advanced winter mountaineering course is a 4 day course designed to
give a good progression from winter skills to winter climbing.
The winter mountaineering course begins by teaching essential winter skills
like crampon use, step cutting and ice axe breaking to enable you to feel
comfortable on snow.
The winter mountaineering course then introduces winter climbing skills
by tackling a winter scramble. We finish the course by guiding you up both
winter ice climbing routes and mixed winter climbing routes.
No previous winter experience is needed for our winter mountaineering course,
however a knowledge of indoor or outdoor summer climbing is an advantage.
Winter climbing is a strenuous activity and advanced winter mountaineering
participants should be hill fit and willing to carry a winter sack into
the climbing area.
The night before: We'll meet up with all the other winter mountaineering
course participants and run through the kit that you have, issue hired kit
and discuss what you need to carry for each day.
Winter mountaineering day 1: Winter skills including walking on snow and
ice, using crampons, step cutting, ice axe braking and basic avalanche awareness.
Winter mountaineering day 2: Guided winter scrambling
Winter mountaineering day 3: Guided winter ice climbing
Winter mountaineering day 4: Guided winter mixed climbing
The order of the winter mountaineering days 3-4 may change weather dependant.
The advanced winter mountaineering course is run on a maximum 1 instructor
to 4 clients ratio on the first day and 1 instructor to 2 client ratio on
days 2-4.
